About The Cover
Because mitochondria evolved from bacteria that were originally engulfed by eukaryotic cells millions of years ago, many FDA-approved antibiotics target mitochondrial ribosomes, as a mild side-effect, which is well-tolerated. These four classes of drugs include: the erythromycins, chloramphenicol, the tetracyclines and glycylcyclines. In this issue of Oncotarget, Lamb et al., 2015 used these antibiotics as “investigational tools” to assess if mitochondrial biogenesis is required for the propagation of cancer stem cells, in 8 different cancer types. Based on their positive results, these FDA-approved antibiotics could be re-purposed for the treatment of cancer, to eradicate cancer stem cells, to prevent tumor recurrence and possibly treat metastatic disease. See Lamb et al.
